Shakthi Shethralaya Dance School has taught Bharatanatyam in Calgary for the past 18 years. We are dedicated to preserving the 2000-year-old art form, and the school has achieved national and international recognition for its remarkable focus on perfection.  We offer certification and professional training in Calgary, Alberta and Tamil Nadu, India

Shakthi Ganesh Sankar

Shakthi Ganesh is a student at the University of Calgary and has been learning Bharatanatyam since the tender age of three at the Shakthi Shethralaya Dance school under the tutelage of Dr. Karthika Devi Ganesh. She has known the Pandanallur style of Bharatanatyam for the past 17 years and has performed at various stages. Her Bharatanatyam skills have impressed many, and have won multiple awards, such as the Youth of distinction award 2019 and the talent section of The Miss Teen Canada beauty pageant. During the pandemic, along with Guru Sri Madurai R Muralidharan in Chennai, she worked hard and earned herself a place in the World Guinness record book, Asia records, and the Indian book of records for dancing on an online platform for nearly 3 hours with people across the globe. It was an international collaboration, and it was a success for many dancers across the world!

With her mom, Shakthi has been teaching young children Bharatanatyam across Calgary, Alberta, in hopes of sharing her love for the art form. She is now the Dance director of Shakthi Shethralaya Dance school and is currently finishing her BA in Bharatanatyam with the plans to earn a  Ph.D. in Bharatanatyam while pursuing a career in the mental health field. She is currently a healthcare Manager and does therapy work with children on the spectrum!

DR. Karthika Devi Ganesh Sankar

Srimathi. Karthika Devi Ganesh is the founder of Shakthi Shethralaya Dance School in Calgary, Alberta. She believes Bharatanatyam is a way of life - An art form that transcends cultural and linguistic barriers and communicates in a language devoid of mysticism. She is carving a niche for herself by exploring facets of this sacred art within the norms and boundaries of cultural tradition. As a Gold Medalist from the late honourable president Sri. Shankar Dayal Sharma, she has now successfully finished her Doctorate in Bharatanatyam. She started the art at age five and learnt under various gurus. She believes she is always a student despite having given numerous public performances. She has performed in several prestigious events, including The Natyanjali Festival, and has won multiple prominent awards. She has also served on international TV channels like Jaya TV and Asianet. Her expression (Abhinaya) and pure body movements (Anga Sutham) are why Chennai, a major city in India, has acknowledged her as a state-level Bharatanatyam Artist. Several critics have acclaimed her stage presence, dance productions, stamina, expressions (Abhinaya) and footwork abilities. With a master's degree in English Literature and Mass Communication, she strives to blend her abilities in the right proportion to carve a niche for herself as a classical dancer and a program producer. She was the director of many classical dance shows on regional TV channels while working as a news producer and a news reader on international TV channels. Her experience includes performing and fundraising for various cultural organizations in India and North America. Organizations like the Leukemia Society, the CHESS organization (an organization/orphanage for HIV+ kids,) the Sri Anagha Datta Society of Alberta and more.

Karthika Ganesh is celebrated and recognized for her unique poses, and exceptional rhythmic movements by the connoisseurs of art

Guru Theresa David

Mrs. Theresa David is a Bharathanatyam dance teacher with an experience in the field for more than 45 years. She has received professional instruction in the Kalashetra style from Mr. Rama Iyengar and has mastered the Thanjavur style from Rajendra Pillai of Vazhuvur. She diligently pursued Carnatic music as well in order to fulfill her dream of teaching dance. More than a thousand kids have now received training from Mrs. Theresa David. She also has the distinction of being Thoothukudi's first female Bharathanatyam teacher.

Kalaimamani Smt. Parvathi Ravi Ghantasala

Kalaimamani Smt. Parvathi Ravi Ghantasala is an established Bharathanatyam performer, versatile choreographer, a loving teacher and an enthusiastic Festival Director. Trained under the tutelage of renowned gurus Kalaimamani Smt. Krishnakumari Narendran and Padmabhushan Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan, her artistic journey spans over three decades. Distinguished music directors have scored music for her Dance Productions. She has had the privilege of performing at prestigious dance festivals in India and abroad. She has won several accolades from critics and media and is the recipient of prestigious titles and awards. She is the founder of Kala Pradarshini (Center for Performing Arts and Cultural Activities) a dance academy imparting training to aspirants in India and overseas and as well as one of Chennai's primere organization showcasing Annual Festival for the talented youngsters and galaxy of eminent National and International artistes for two decades.
